James Joyce

It is entirely possible that the novel will go the way of the poem -- an art form reserved for special occasions and considered by most as a rarefied form of culture.

In the late 20th Century the literary novel has already become iconic. Most people will read only one novel each year. A collective opinion will anoint a few lucky novels the privilege of mass acceptance. Chances are that the novel will be from an established best-selling author --a John Grisham, Steven King, Dean Koontz, Ann Rice, Danielle Steel or Robin Cook. Instead, readers should seek out real writers.

Following is a list of living twentieth century novelists who carry on the lonely tradition of writing great works that fewer and fewer are taking the time to read. These authors and their novels represent a "best of" list. Check your local library or go to www.amazon.com to find their works and others worth reading.
