"Catch a wave and you're sittin on top of the world"

-- The Beach Boys

Hawaii's Duke Kahanamoku is singularly credited with popularizing surfing world-wide during the 1920s. After his 1912 and 1920 Olympic swimming fame, he brought his ten foot redwood plank surfboard with him in his many travels and drew huge crowds to his performances.

A 1969 interview with the "Duke" from Surfer Magazine provides some great insight into this graceful and gravity-defying sport. See the original typed manuscript of the interview: http://www.surfermag.com/magazine/vintage/dukeinterview/theduke.htm.
