Claes Oldenburg creates outdoor sculpture that simultaneously pleases the public and art critics. Giant clothespins, an enormous spoon with a cherry, and gargantuan paper clips are just a few Oldenburg creations that rise up from the ground and transform our relationship with space.

Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen, Spoonbridge and Cherry, 1985-1988, aluminum, stainless steel, paint.

Nearly every community in the United States has some form of sculpture, whether it is as rich as the sculpture garden at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City , or as simple as a flagpole with decorative flowers around the base.

Sculpture is an ever-present reminder that our understanding of humanity's place in the universe is at best a question mark.
