"Music hath charms to soothe a savage breast, to
soften rocks, or bend a knotted oak."
--Congreve, The Mourning Bride
Humans attach meaning to life through ceremony. The highest form of ceremony
is the act of making music. Music is universal -- its beats, rhythms, melodies,
and tempos speak much more deeply than words.
Dancing and music, taken together or alone, are used by many cultures
to bring their practitioners to a state of enlightenment -- the chanting
of Christian Orthodox monks, the whirling Dervish, the songs of the Native
American Lakota, a gospel choir in a Baptist church.
Other music just moves us and makes us move.
