The next time the sky is clear just after dusk, go outside and look up at the early evening stars just above the horizon. Chances are that those stars are actually planets. For millennia, people have looked to the sky for answers to the complexities of their lives on earth.

Those with a scientific outlook tend to dismiss astrology as nothing more than superstition, but when viewed from the perspective of ancient observers, the position of the Sun, the Moon and the planets had correlations with the behavior, moods and motivations of those around them. In the absence of other knowledge, the study of these correlations became detailed and complex.

A theory that planetary and cosmic activity can influence lives and personalities is no more bizarre than a theory purporting that the ingestion of certain amino acids and compounds can improve one's longevity or even intelligence.

A scholarly study of astrology in the 1960's which sought to disprove the influence of planetary movements looked at the lives of famous individuals in relation to the position of planets at the time of their birth. To the researcher's suprise, the coincidences were too numerous to be explained away. The research revealed that many political leaders, for example, were born when Mars was prominent in the sky, a consistent belief among astrologers.

Astrology, at the very least, provides a point of focus for people to examine their relationship to the world around them.
